In 2016, Megan Hood and her husband Lachie took ownership of a severely neglected farm, house and garden in South Australia that we featured in our July 2024 newsletter. Overgrown natives, dead gum trees, and a bare yard with half missing fencing formed the beginning of a journey which would ignite Megan’s passion for gardening.
With a background in architecture, Megan tackled the initial challenges systematically. She planted hedges to shield the house from the dirt road and added plane trees to mitigate the harsh western sun beaming through the predominantly glass back of the house. Fencing was installed, and the garden began to take shape with structural plants forming the backbone of the landscape.
Megan utilised a variety of Neutrog products, such as Whoflungdung, Rapid Raiser and POPUL8 to address water retention, nutrient availability and protect plants against frost and extreme heat. These products played a crucial role in nurturing the garden back to health.
The long-term vision for the property includes adding a pergola at the back of the house, adorned with deciduous plants, creating a seamless connection between the house and backyard.
“It’s a very rewarding hobby and has become a great refuge during summer and on a farm during dry spells,” says Megan.
As time goes on, Megan’s dedication continues to transform the once-derelict property into a thriving sanctuary.
