Grasstrees Australia: Rescuing Endangered Native Flora

Grasstrees Australia is renowned for successful grasstree rescue and stabilisation. Their nursery based in Middle Swan, WA, has the capacity to hold 7,000 grasstrees.  Over the past 35 years they have worked closely with government, city councils, developers, and landscapers to rescue West Australian native Xanthorrhoea Preissii and return them to residence, public open spaces, and land developments.

Under special License, Grasstrees Australia remove the endangered native flora before sites are cleared and return them to their nursery where they are stabilised and nurtured for a minimum of 12 months.  This allows the grasstrees to recover from the stressful extraction and redevelop root mass.  This stabilisation process is crucial to ensure that these endangered trees will survive once replanted.  It is their processes of rescuing, nursery stabilising and replanting these sustainable, waterwise natives that achieves their ethos to create sustainable developments for tomorrow.

An integral part of their nursery process is the application of Seamungus pellets throughout the growing media.

“We find Seamungus to be a gentle soil conditioner and fertiliser compatible with the requirements of our nursery stabilised grasstrees.  We also recommend Seamungus to all our customers for ongoing care,” says Grasstrees Australia Director, Fiona Reynolds.

With native gardening becoming a focus of many suburban gardens, Grasstrees make an immediate impact statement.  Their unique shape, in both foliage and trunk configuration, make each plant a living art piece.  Evan and Fiona, together with the Grasstrees Australia team warmly invite eager native gardeners to attend our purpose-built nursery in the Middle Swan and become a part of the story as they work to save this culturally significant part of Western Australian history.
