Set in a 100-acre estate in the Adelaide foothills, with spectacular views stretching to the ocean, Carrick Hill is Australia’s most intact period mansion, lovingly preserved for all to enjoy today.
Carrick Hill’s spectacular formal gardens are popular all year round – whether you’re a keen gardener or looking for somewhere to meet friends.
The formal garden was created as a setting for elegant social occasions and tennis parties. Today these areas are ideal for weddings, open air concerts, theatrical performances and private functions. The garden is famous for its roses and pear arbour as well as outstanding design features including a rill.
Hedges, lawn terracing and stone paving create a series of small gardens, surrounded by long avenues bordered by different plantings. The surrounding grounds, modelled on the English country park, feature clumps of trees, orchards and cutting beds.
Ryan Kemp is the Garden Manager at Carrick Hill and is keenly interested in the R&D work which is undertaken by Neutrog.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the results of soil samples collected from our Alister Clark rose garden. It’s of enormous benefit – not just to us – but to all gardens who hold Alister Clark collections to understand biological methods of keeping these roses performing to their optimum. We also follow Neutrog’s Year Round Feeding Program. Seamungus is applied in winter and then during spring, summer and autumn we will use Sudden Impact for Roses”.
Ryan has a team of gardeners, but says, “we cannot tell you how important our volunteers are at Carrick Hill. Not just for the work they undertake in the gardens, but in the mansion as well.” One of the jobs we’ve just completed is the spreading of three truckloads of Whoflungdung.
If you’ve not been to Carrick Hill, then spring would be a lovely time to plan a visit.
